Dudettes Take Alabama by Storm
The 5 Dudettes arrived in Birmingham, Alabama this month just as the edge of a tornado whipped the sky into a cocktail of big fat raindrops and noisy hail. We came to hike and canoe in some of the state's most amazing wilderness areas. But along the way we got a bit distracted by the FOOD. How can you not love a place where restaurants categorize banana pudding as a vegetable, a BLT may come stuffed with fried green tomatoes and where the best possible breakfast is a big piece of pecan pie?

Wow, please tell me more about the food! Sounds good.
I second that. Sounds great.
Barreling down the highway in a van heading for a possible canoeing spot in the Cahaba River, we opened our box lunches not expecting anything unusual, but the salad tucked into the corner of the humble container was so transcendent all conversation stopped. Big juicy strawberries leaned against spiced pecans, all nestled in baby lettuces and strewn with a rich local blue-veined cheese. Ahh, the famous "Baby Blue Salad" from the Homewood Gourmet. No wonder it made the state's brochure for the food-obsessed titled "100 dishes to eat in Alabama before you die." If you're going, order the pamphlet from 1/800 ALABAMA before you get on that plane.
